Prepare the syrup: In a deep saucepan dissolve the sugar in the water, boil, stirring, for 8 to 9 minutes. Meanwhile combine the softened butter, the powdered almonds and sugar until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well each time. Soak only one side of each slice of brioche loaf in the syrup. Arrange them one by one, dry side down, on an oven sheet, wet each with a few drops of rum. Spread each slice with the egg and butter mixture. Cover with chopped almonds, pressing them lightly, dust with confectioners sugar. Bake in a medium oven (300F) until golden brown.

1 brioche loaf with grapes
1 stick butter
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup ground almonds
2 medium eggs
1/2 cup chopped almonds
a few tbsp rum
confectioners sugar

Syrup:
1 1/3 cups sugar
2 cups water
